Senator Norman Grant, President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society stated that “our Board of Management and our over 220,000 farmers in the country would like to salute the work of the Late Honourable James Thompson, former Member of Parliament, Custos of Westmoreland and Director of the Board of Management of the Jamaica Agricultural Society, who has passed on recently at the age of 99-years-old.”

The Late Honourable James Thompson has given over 60 years of dedicated service to the agricultural sector and has served as a member of the Board of Management of the Jamaica Agricultural Society during a transformational era in the 1960s- 1970s under the leadership of the Late Willie Henry former President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society.

His commitment to advancing the cause of rural development and a better quality of life of the farming population is well known.

He would have indeed been proud of the success of the Agricultural sector, which witnessed a commendable 18-percent growth at the end of the third quarter of 2013 and a domestic crop production increase of 614,911 metric tonnes compared to 610,138 metric tonnes in 2012, a growth of .8%, to reflect the highest recorded production in 17 years.

“The Jamaica Agricultural Society salutes him as one of the giants of our time,” Senator Grant ended. “We wish to express our condolences to his family, which includes Mr. John Thompson, Director of the Jamaica Agricultural Society and the Reverend Dr. Robert Thompson.”

Senator Grant , says that the Jamaica Agricultural Society will be observing observe a period of silence at the 119th Annual General Meeting of the Society on July 9, 2014 at Denbigh Showground May Pen Clarendon, the same day of his Thanks Giving Service.
